CEYLON

Tea was first introduced into Ceylon from China about the year 1824. The early importation did not appear to be successful. In 1839 supplies of seed were received from Assam and the Tea industry in Ceylon can be traced to this stock. It is on record that in 1867 the de Worms brothers opened a clearing in China tea on Labookellie Estate, and areas were simultaneously opened on Pen-y-lan Estate, Dolosbage and Loolecondera Estate, Hewahetasome of which may be seen there at the present day.
